Doo Wops and Lollipops is this year’s show by The Bluebelles, playing at the Space@Symposium Hall. Dressed in 50s high school style, with polka dot skirts and white sneakers, The Bluebelles deliver A Cappella versions of a variety of songs, giving them all a 1950s doo wop feel.
Some of the songs were hits in the 50s, such as Mr Sandman, Lollipop, and Cry Me a River, but there are also some unusual arrangements of more modern songs. Can you imagine a doo wop A Cappella version of Radiohead’s Creep? That’s just one example of the originality of this group of University of Exeter students.
My own favourite was their version of The Beatles’ Blackbird, with the main part sung by a young woman with a beautiful pure voice (sorry, I didn’t get any individual names).
Doo Wops and Lollipops is on until 13th August, and well worth a visit if you want to relax for a short while in a very comfortable seat and listen to some great singing.
