Scotland’s Wild Heart at The Queen’s Hall is one of those events at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe that you wish was more than a one off event so that you could go back and experience it all again.

This show is an extension of the Maramedia/BBC nature film Scotland’s Wild Heart and features original soundtrack co-composer (along with Simon Ashdown), award-winning composer/pianist Donald Shaw (Capercaillie) along with some the cream of Scotland’s musicians, including Patsy Reid (fiddle), Michael McGoldrick (flute and pipes), Sorren MacLean (guitars), James MacKintosh (percussion) and a handpicked string section led by Grit orchestrator Greg Lawson (fiddle) who perform the music from this series to specially edited HD clips of the television series.  The result is a visual delight of nature and landscape photography at its very best, and folk meeting orchestral music at their best combining into something very special.

Donald Shaw so obviously loves Scotland, its landscapes, its wildlife and its seasons, and that love shines through in all of the music that he has written for “Scotland’s Wild Heart”, and that love of what makes up Scotland’s own wild heart is also very obviously shared by the other musicians on stage.   Right at the very end of the show, Donald tells us that it was only possible for everyone to get together for one full rehearsal before this show, and that fact alone shows the quality of this hand picked ensemble of musicians…the result was a wonderful show of music and film.

For anyone wanting to find out more about the obviously far larger film series and the full soundtrack, both are available now to buy  on DVD and CD.
