Forget Me Not at Greenside @ Nicolson Square sounded, on paper, like an interesting play, based as it is on real life Second World War correspondence by members of the writer’s family. Unfortunately, however, for me this play was too difficult to follow, jumping back and forward between different periods in the central character June’s life with little to differentiate between the different time periods. The relationships between the characters were also confusing at the beginning of the play, and it took some time to establish who they were and what they were to each other. It was described as “somewhat surrealistic”, which it definitely was as some of the characters seemed to be dead but still around.
A line from June made me smile somewhat ruefully as it summed up how I felt about the play – “I am more than a bit confused about this card game”.
Having said all that, there were some moving moments in the performance, but overall this one just didn’t work for me.
